Foo Jia Xin, a second-year sociology undergraduate, has been elected President of the 34th National University of Singapore Students’ Arts and Social Sciences Club Management Committee after a unanimous vote by committee members at the elections held on Aug. 31,.
Prior to her election, the 22-year-old was voted into the committee by students from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences through a vote of confidence conducted on Aug. 26 and Aug. 27. The vote allows students to elect nominees into the committee by voting “yes” or “no” for each candidate. Foo managed to secure 154 “yes” votes out of 181 votes, earning a place on the committee with 86.5 percent of ballots.
Besides Foo, the other elected members include Financial Secretary Ng Cai Ling, Student Welfare Secretary Jeanette Flower Kwan and Freshman Orientation Programme Chairperson Karthik S/O Tamil Maran.
“To be honest, I’m pretty anxious,” Foo said about her election. “When I ran for the management committee, I did not really anticipate becoming president. I wasn’t in the previous committee so this is a very new experience to me.
I am anxious but it’ll be fun and a good learning experience, and I’m looking forward to working with the team. It’s great to see them so passionate.”
In her year-long term, Foo said she aims to foster a common identity among the FASS community through outreach projects and activities.
“I feel that one of the means to achieve identity is through vibrancy. I would love to have random festivals such as Halloween where you can go dress up, Christmas, anything! As long as there is a sense of more life within FASS, so FASS students will associate it with their campus and with their school life, and through that creates an identity,” she said.
The announcement of the newly elected committee elicited mixed responses from FASS students. “This new committee seems promising,” Nicolette Mok, an English literature undergraduate, said. “I hope that they will present an effective voice for the student body and push for more positive changes.”
English language undergraduate Alyssa Tan said, “I hope that they will rise to the occasion, because right now they still seem a little inexperienced and unclear about their plans as a committee. But since they have already been elected, I guess we’ll have to put our faith in them.”
Communications and new media undergraduate Lee Kay Ling, however, was indifferent toward the new team. She said, “I don’t really know who the new committee is and I don’t really care as long as they do what they are supposed to do.”
Tan Wei Yuan, outgoing president of the 33rd NUS Students’ Arts and Social Sciences Club Management Committee, expressed his support for the new leaders. He said, “Every management committee is like a cycle: ideas die and ideas are born. I look forward to what they bring to the table.”
